Scope
After the fall of Rome, agricultural knowledge diverged into two major streams. In Europe, the manorial system organized farming around open fields, common pastures, and feudal labor obligations, while monastic communities preserved and extended Roman horticultural knowledge. In the Islamic world, a parallel agricultural revolution introduced new crops, irrigation techniques, and systematic agronomy that influenced Mediterranean farming for centuries.
