Scope
American agriculture industrialized rapidly in this era. The steel plow, mechanical reaper, and railroad network transformed farming from local subsistence to commercial-scale production. Simultaneously, the institutional framework for American agricultural science was established: the USDA (1862), the Morrill Act creating land-grant colleges (1862), the Hatch Act funding experiment stations (1887), and the agricultural press that disseminated new knowledge. This era also covers the agricultural press, early scientific soil analysis, and the expansion of American farming across the Great Plains.
