Scope

The first half of the 20th century saw agriculture transform through mechanization (tractors replacing horses), scientific breeding (hybrid corn), institutional support (Cooperative Extension, created 1914), and crisis-driven conservation (the Dust Bowl and the Soil Conservation Service). This era covers the replacement of animal power with engine power, the emergence of agricultural engineering as a discipline, the development of rural electrification, and the applied science that produced modern plant pathology, veterinary medicine, and food safety standards.
