Scope
The 1985 Farm Bill introduced conservation compliance, linking federal payments to soil-conservation practice and driving no-till adoption. GPS receivers became affordable and accurate enough for agricultural use, spawning precision agriculture: yield monitors, variable-rate application, and the first farm-scale GIS analysis. Genetically modified crops entered commercial production in 1996. Computers moved from university labs to farm offices.
